Debate continues over Arizona immigration bill

The bill known as SB 1070, or Arizona Senate Bill 1070, the Arizona immigration bill, has caused a lot of debate. Critics allege racial profiling and racism are made law by the bill. John McCain came out in support of the bill and the President is vehemently opposed to it. The Arizona immigration bill has also drawn the ire of the Catholic Church. Arizona practically needs debt management at this point dealing with the problem.

Obama condemns Arizona immigration bill

President Obama, according to CBS, believes the Arizona immigration bill is “misguided” as an attempt at reform. The President believes the bill could “undermine basic notion of fairness that we cherish as Americans” and the trust of law enforcement by the public. Police officers, under the bill, could investigate the citizenship of anyone they believed to be an immigrant. Governor Brewer has been asked by the Mexican government not to sign the bill.

John McCain believes in the Bill

According to a New York Times blog, John McCain backs the Arizona immigration bill. Senator McCain held a far more favorable position towards immigrants. He recently told Bill O’Reilly he believed the state was doing what it thought was best. The federal government, as he and others have pointed out, has failed to do much about illegal immigration. The state of Arizona could use some money now, as they shoulder a lot of costs of dealing with illegal immigration. Arizona officials deal with this problem more than almost any other state.

It hinges on Governor Jan Brewer

The Arizona immigration bill is set to go to Governor Jan Brewer’s desk for approval. Many have called for a veto. They include the Bishop of Tuscon, the Los Angeles Diocese Archbishop, and the Mexican government. Rep. Raul Grijalva and other Latino members of Congress have denounced the bill. A review of the bill is pledged by President Obama.
