ABC News reports that Clementi, an 18-year-old freshman at Rutgers University in New Jersey, has committed death after learning that what he thought was a private homosexual encounter in his dorm room was broadcast live online. Based on various news outlets, classmates of Clementi – Ravi and Wei – were allegedly responsible for invading Clementi’s privacy by transmitting his private gay encounter online. Soon after his horrific online outing, Clementi signed off on Facebook and signed out of life by jumping off a bridge.
Tyler Clementi told everybody he was going
At 8:42 p.m., a Facebook post was put up by Tyler Clementi stating, “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry” on September 22. The body of Clementi has not been found yet, but there was a body discovered just north of the bridge on the Hudson River. New Jersey authorities were the ones to discover the body. Near there was a wallet with the driver’s license and a Rutgers University student ID that belonged to Clementi.
Clementi was praised for how good he is with music along with his good personality in a statement that the Clementi family attorney, Paul Mainardi put out confirming his death.
Listening to all over the place, ‘I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.’
Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan discussed that because Tyler Clementi’s homosexual encounter was showed via iChat, both Rutgers Scarlet Knights Ravi and Molly Wei are being charged with two counts of invasion of privacy. There was a remark made by Ravi about this. He said on Twitter:
“Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”
Ravi was on Twitter again a couple days later. He tweeted something new:
“Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it is happening again.”
Police come to take Wei and Ravi in
Wei and Ravi both surrendered to the new Jersey police. Neither remains in police custody anymore though. According to ABC News, Wei was discharged on her own recognizance, when Dharun Ravi managed to post $25,000 bail. More data could be released as the investigation continues.
